Music Production

Every project produced, recorded, and mixed by MTCHLR

Lately is a folk-pop song by Kevin Farris that draws inspiration from Noah Kahan, with a focus on nostalgia. Kevin reached out looking for a producer and collaborator, and I was quick to jump in. We’ve been working together ever since.

Campfires is an intimate track by Jay Ssandri. Jay was one of the first artists I worked with regularly, and continue to work with. We bonded over our Mexican roots, as well as our love of Bon Iver and Folk music. We continue to work together to this day.

Overthinking is a folk-pop song by Kevin Farris. It took about a month or so to dial in the perfect amount of naive and anthem. It became a nice, full, anthemic production in the vein of Noah Kahan. This one was especially a fun one because I got to learn some banjo and mandolin for it!

Caramel Midnight is Jay Ssandri’s biggest track with over 1.3M streams. After working on this folk track, we managed to get on a Spotify editorial playlist called “Fresh Finds Folk”

BOYS FROM NOWHERE is a big folk anthem by greek artist PAVLOS. PAVLOS reached out looking for a producer that fit his vision. During pre-production, we drew inspiration from Matt Hansen, Noah Kahan, and The Lumineers, and we spent the next month honing in a sound that felt both intimate, and massive.

That’s Life was produced with Madeleine in person inside Blackcreek Studio. Over the course of one day, we tracked the entire song as well as filmed the entire process, which you can watch here

On Location

The biggest core principle of my work is document everything.

For the past five years, almost nothing has gone undocumented. Sessions, events, everyday life; filmed, organized, and archived by date.

It started as a personal instinct to preserve moments, and turned into an always-available library of real, usable content.

Marketing

Case Study:

EWYN Stratford

The Brief:

Ewyn came in needing stronger marketing infrastructure. Their existing presence wasn't converting and they had no reliable way to capture leads online.

What I Did

  • Built a new website from scratch

  • Created social media posts (short form video and pictures)

  • Designed and wrote ad creative for Meta

  • Set up and managed paid ad campaigns

  • Built a lead capture funnel with a contact form

  • Wrote copy across all touchpoints

The Result A complete marketing system built from nothing — website, ads, and funnel working together. The campaigns generated new client leads within the first few months.

What Wasn’t Working

  • Dated-looking content and website

  • No funnel for leads

  • No advertising

  • Over-used creative

About

Matthew Smith is a Stratford-based creative producer, audio engineer, and content creator working under his production alias MTCHLR. His work spans music production and recording, short-form video, and brand content — tied together by a genuine obsession with documentation and capturing moments before they disappear.

That instinct shows up everywhere. In the studio, recording artists at their most vulnerable and honest. Behind a camera, shooting home-tape style footage of everyday life, sessions, and events with the belief that ordinary moments are worth preserving. In his content work, building an audience through behind-the-scenes storytelling and education that feels more like a personal document than a marketing strategy.

Trained in audio recording technology at OIART, Matthew brings a production-level ear and eye to everything he creates — whether that's a record, a promo, or a piece of social content. He works across music production and engineering, video production, and marketing, and is most at home when the work involves telling a true story about something that actually happened.
